On the completion of the visit of the Ambassador of Belarus to Sri Lanka

As part of the working visit of the Ambassador of Belarus to Sri Lanka, on February 3-4, 2023 meetings were held with the leadership of the Ministry of Trade, Commerce and Food Security, the Foreign Ministry of Sri Lanka, the Division of Western Countries and the Protocol Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka, as well as with the leadership of the Police of Colombo and other officials.

During the meeting with Nalin Fernando, the member of the Parliament of Sri Lanka, the Minister of Trade, Commerce and Food Security, the parties agreed to hold the third session of the Joint Belarusian-Lankan Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation in Colombo this year with representatives of the business communities of both countries. The Sri Lankan Side expressed interest in maintaining and developing sustainable trade and economic ties with the Republic of Belarus, notifying its significant potential for the development of the island, in particular in the agricultural sector, the chemical complex, pharmaceuticals and joint projects.

The issues of keeping Belarusian citizens in the prison for a long time without a guilty verdict were discussed with Chandana Vikramaratne, the Inspector General of the Police of Sri Lanka. The Inspector General of Police was urged to expedite the consideration of the case by the judicial authorities of the country as soon as possible.

Ambassador of Belarus Andrei Rzheussky also met with Manisha Gunasekera, Additional Secretary/Bilateral Affairs (West) of the Foreign Ministry of Sri Lanka, as well as with Senarat Dissanayake, Chief of Protocol of MFA Sri Lanka. During the meetings the whole range of issues of bilateral cooperation was discussed, including the participation of Sri Lankan citizens in educational programs in Belarus, the diversification of mutual supplies of products and services, the necessity to update the legal framework, as well as issues of mutual support in international organizations, etc.

On February 4, 2023 a courtesy visit was held to Ali Sabri, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka, during which the head of the Foreign Ministry emphasized the friendly and constructive nature of bilateral cooperation, and also noted the desire of MFA Sri Lanka to assist in resolving of the main issues of bilateral cooperation and in the international arena. In addition, the head of the Foreign Ministry of Sri Lanka agreed to further deepen the political dialogue between our friendly countries and confirmed the readiness to hold the next foreign ministries’ consultations in Colombo in the near future.

On February 4, 2023, the Ambassador of Belarus took part in the protocol events, dedicated to the 75th anniversary of Sri Lanka's Independence Day at the invitation of the Sri Lankan Side.
